Why Texas nurses take this course

The Texas Board of Nursing requires every licensed nurse to complete at least two contact hours in nursing jurisprudence and ethics before the end of every third two-year renewal period (Board Rule 216.3). The hours must cover the Nursing Practice Act, Board rules, standards of practice and professional boundaries.

This course covers exactly that ground in six short video modules, then tests you on it. Your certificate lists the course number, so it can be reported and audited like any other approved CE.

What the two hours cover

Six modules that follow the order the Board's rule lists them in: the law and the Board, scope of practice, boundaries and patient rights, accountability and the duty to report, vulnerable populations and end-of-life, and technology in modern practice.

Nicole Pollard is a Licensed Vocational Nurse with more than thirty years at the bedside and the founder of Stone Academy. She opened the school's first nurse aide class in Stephenville in 2010 and has trained nurse aides, phlebotomists and EKG technicians across Dallas-Fort Worth since.

Her nursing career runs through OB/GYN, geriatrics, home health, medical-surgical units, wound care and IV therapy. She is also the school's test proctor, known for exams that prepare students for the real certification test rather than surprise them.

Who has to take jurisprudence and ethics CE?

Every nurse licensed in Texas: RN, LVN and APRN. The Board asks for at least two contact hours in nursing jurisprudence and ethics in every third renewal cycle.

How do I know if it is my cycle?

Count back on your renewal history. If your last two renewals did not include jurisprudence and ethics hours, this renewal needs them. When in doubt, the Board's licensee portal shows what it expects.

Is the course really free?

Yes. Stone Academy offers it at no charge to Texas nurses. You only need an account on this site.

Is it reported to CE Broker?

The course carries CE Broker course number 20-1222650. Your certificate shows that number; keep it in case the Board asks for proof.

I am a nurse aide, not a nurse. Do I need this?
